VW RNS 300 & RNS 310 Radio Code Guide

The RNS 300 and its successor the RNS 310 are the compact factory navigation units of the Golf V/VI era, fitted to the Golf, Passat, Touran, Caddy and T5. After a power interruption they ask for a 4-digit code before radio or navigation will start.

RNS 300 or RNS 310?

• RNS 300 — monochrome or basic colour screen with CD navigation, ±2005–2009.
• RNS 310 — 5-inch colour touchscreen with SD navigation, ±2009–2014.

Both use the standard VW code system with a VWZ serial number on the unit label.

Finding the serial number

1. Remove the unit with release keys (four slots in the corners).
2. Note the full VWZ serial from the label on the top or side.
3. Photograph the label to avoid misreading.

Then order your VW code — the code is calculated from that serial.

Entering the code

1. The screen asks for the code after switching on.
2. RNS 300: use the preset buttons; RNS 310: use the on-screen keypad.
3. Confirm — the unit unlocks immediately with radio and navigation.

Frequently asked questions

Only two attempts — what happens after that?

The screen locks on SAFE for an hour. Leave the ignition on, wait, and the input reopens. The counter is not cumulative once a correct code is entered.

Does the code also cover the navigation SD card?

Yes — one code unlocks the whole unit. Missing maps are a separate issue (the SD card may need replacing), not a code issue.

My screen says SAFE but never shows 1000. Is it broken?

It is in the lock-out hour after too many attempts. Power it for an hour and the prompt returns.
