VW RCD 500 Radio Code Guide

The RCD 500 is the top button-operated radio of the Golf V era: a double-DIN unit with built-in 6-CD changer, fitted to the Golf V, Passat B6, Touran and Jetta around 2004–2009. Like every VW unit of its generation it locks with SAFE when battery power is interrupted.

Finding the VWZ serial number

The RCD 500 cannot show its serial on the display. It is on the label on the top of the case:

1. Remove the unit — the RCD 500 needs four release keys or a Torx T20 screwdriver depending on year.
2. Find the label and note the number starting VWZ (fourteen characters).
3. Photograph the label as a backup; 0/O and 1/I are easily misread.

Entering the code

1. Switch on: the display shows SAFE, then 1000.
2. Set the four digits with preset buttons 1–4.
3. Confirm by holding the right-arrow / tune button until the unit unlocks.

The 2-attempt rule applies: after two wrong codes the display locks on SAFE for an hour. Leave the radio on and it resets by itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is the RCD 500 code the same as my RCD 300 code?

No — every unit has its own code tied to its own VWZ serial. If your car has ever had a radio swap, order with the serial of the unit that is actually installed.

The CD changer jams but the radio works. Is that code-related?

No. The anti-theft lock affects the whole unit or nothing; a jammed changer is mechanical.

Can the dealer read the code from the car?

VW dealers can look up the code with the VIN and proof of ownership, usually for a fee. The serial route is faster and works without an appointment.
