VW RCD 300 Radio Code
The VW RCD 300 is the pre-2008 predecessor to the RCD 310, fitted as standard in Golf V, Polo 9N/9N3, Jetta V, Caddy III, and several other Volkswagen models. If it is displaying SAFE, you need the VWZ serial and the matching unlock code. This guide covers everything you need to know.
What Is the VW RCD 300?
The RCD 300 (Radio CD 300) is a single-DIN CD/radio unit manufactured by Blaupunkt and Bosch for Volkswagen, fitted from approximately 2003 to 2008. It predates the RCD 310 and lacks MP3 playback, but uses the same VWZ serial system and identical code entry procedure. It was standard or optional in:
- Golf V (2003–2008)
- Polo IV (9N and 9N3, 2001–2009)
- Jetta V (2005–2010)
- Caddy III (2004–2010)
- Touran I (2003–2006, early build)
- Passat B6 (2005–2010, base specification)

Finding the VWZ Serial on the RCD 300
The RCD 300 uses a 14-character serial beginning with VWZ. Retrieve it using one of these methods:
- On-screen combination: With the unit in SAFE mode, press and hold preset buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously for two seconds. The VWZ serial appears on the single-line display.
- Unit removal: Insert VW extraction keys (four U-shaped blades) into the four holes around the unit face, pull the unit forward, and read the serial from the label on the unit body.
Entering the Code on the RCD 300
- Switch the ignition to position II. The display shows SAFE.
- Press preset button 1 to cycle the first digit to the correct number, button 2 for the second digit, and so on up to button 4.
- Press the seek/search button to confirm.
- If the code is correct, the unit returns to normal operation. If wrong, the display returns to SAFE and one attempt is deducted from the remaining allowance.

Lockout Behaviour on the RCD 300
The RCD 300 follows the standard VW lockout sequence:
- SAFE: Standard locked state. Multiple attempts are available.
- WAIT (approximately 1 hour): A wrong code has been entered. Keep the ignition in position II and wait for the countdown.
- 1000: One final attempt before a permanent lockout that requires a dealer ODIS reset.
The same logic applies to the RCD 310, RCD 510, and RNS 510 — the lockout system is consistent across all VWZ-serial units.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the RCD 300 code the same format as the RCD 310?
Yes — both use a four-digit numeric code entered via presets 1–4 and confirmed with the seek button. The code itself will be different (each unit has a unique code tied to its VWZ serial), but the process is identical.
The on-screen serial retrieval isn't working on my RCD 300 — what should I do?
Some early RCD 300 variants do not support the on-screen serial retrieval. In this case, the unit must be removed using extraction keys to read the label. This is a two-minute job and requires no special mechanical skills.
Can the RCD 300 be upgraded to an RCD 310?
Yes — both are single-DIN units with the same ISO connector. An RCD 310 is a direct drop-in replacement. You will need the code for the replacement RCD 310's VWZ serial, not the old RCD 300's serial.
My VW Golf V had two different radios — how do I know which I have?
The RCD 300 has no MP3 symbol on its face and has a simpler single-line display. The RCD 310 added MP3 and AUX input and was available from 2008. The serial prefix (VWZ) and entry method are the same for both. Check the model number on the front face of the unit if in doubt.
