VW RCD 200 Radio Code Guide

The RCD 200 is the entry-level VW factory radio of the mid-2000s: a single-CD unit without screen frills, fitted to the Polo 9N, Fox, Caddy 2K, T5 Transporter and some Golf V base models. After a battery disconnect it shows SAFE and then 1000 — the sign it wants its 4-digit code. This guide covers the serial, the notorious 2-attempt rule and the entry procedure.

Finding the VWZ serial number

The RCD 200 cannot display its own serial. It is printed on the label on the side of the unit:

1. Remove the radio with two flat release keys (slots left and right of the fascia).
2. Find the label with the number starting VWZ — fourteen characters in total.
3. Photograph the label so every character is sharp; a misread character produces the wrong code.

Entering the code — mind the 2-attempt rule

1. Switch the radio on: the display shows SAFE, then 1000.
2. Use presets 1–4 to set the four digits of your code.
3. Confirm by holding the right arrow / scan button (model-dependent: sometimes preset 6) until the radio unlocks.

Important: VW units allow only two attempts. After the second wrong code the display locks on SAFE and you must leave the radio switched on for a full hour before it accepts input again. Check every digit before confirming.

Frequently asked questions

My display shows SAFE and nothing else. Is the radio broken?

No — SAFE without the 1000 prompt means the unit is in its lock-out hour after too many attempts. Leave it powered on; after about 60 minutes it returns to the 1000 input state.

Is my code in the service booklet?

Often, yes: original owners received a code card with the booklet. Second-hand cars usually lost it — that is exactly what serial-based retrieval solves.

Does this guide also apply to the RCD 210 and 215?

Yes. The RCD 210/215 replaced the 200 from around 2010 and use the same VWZ serial system, the same 2-attempt rule and the same entry method.
