VW Gamma Radio Code Guide

The VW Gamma is the classic cassette radio of the Golf IV era, fitted from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s in the Golf III/IV, Passat B5, New Beetle, Polo 6N and T4 Transporter. Generations IV and V of the Gamma are everywhere in surviving cars of that period — and they all show SAFE the moment the battery is disconnected.

Finding the serial number

The Gamma's serial is on the sticker on the top or side of the case and starts with VWZ (fourteen characters). The unit cannot display it, so removal is required:

1. Insert two flat release keys into the slots left and right (Gamma IV) or four round pins (Gamma V).
2. Slide the unit out and note the full VWZ serial from the sticker.
3. Double-check characters like 0/O and 1/I — one misread character means a wrong code.

Then order your VW code with that serial; the code is fixed to the unit for life.

Entering the code on a Gamma

1. Switch on: display shows SAFE, then 1000.
2. Set the four digits with preset buttons 1–4 (press repeatedly to raise each digit).
3. Confirm by holding the >10 / seek-right button (Gamma IV) or SCAN until SAFE disappears.

Like all VW units of this era the Gamma allows two attempts, then locks on SAFE for an hour. Leave it switched on and the counter resets automatically.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Gamma IV and Gamma V?

The IV (up to ±1998) has the double-slot removal system and amber display; the V (1998–2003) uses four round removal pins and a slightly larger display. Both use the VWZ serial and the same code procedure.

My Gamma shows SAFE permanently. Can it still be saved?

Yes. Permanent SAFE is the lock-out state after two wrong codes. Leave the radio on for an hour (engine running or charger connected) and the 1000 prompt returns for a fresh attempt.

The sticker is unreadable. What are my options?

Upload a photo of whatever remains of the label with your order — partial serials can often be completed. Alternatively a VW dealer can look up the code with the VIN and proof of ownership.
