Volvo Radio Code — HU-Series Serial Number Guide
Volvo OEM radios have been built around the HU (Head Unit) platform since the late 1990s, progressing through models from the HU-403 to the Sensus Connect system found in modern XC60 and XC90 models. Like all OEM radios, they store an anti-theft code that reactivates after any power interruption. This guide explains where to find the serial number on each generation and how to re-enter your unlock code.
Volvo Radio Serial Number: Where to Find It
The serial number location varies significantly by generation:
- HU-403 / HU-613 (V70 II, S60 I, pre-2007) — the serial label is on the top of the head unit casing. On the P80 and P2 platform cars (V70, S60, XC90 I), the radio is housed behind a trim panel. Remove the panel and use DIN release keys to slide the unit out. The label is on the top surface.
- HU-650 / HU-803 / HU-850 (V70 III, V60 I, V50, S60 II, XC60 I — 2007–2018) — these are double-DIN units. The serial is on the top casing label, accessible after removing the double-DIN unit. On most P3/P3 facelift cars the unit slides out once the surrounding trim ring is removed.
- RTI (Road Traffic Information) system — the serial is on the RTI processor unit, which sits in the boot or under the centre console. This is a separate component from the HU head unit and carries its own serial.
- Sensus Connect (V40 II facelift, XC60 II, XC90 II, XC40) — navigate to Settings → System → About. The head unit serial is displayed on screen.

How to Enter a Volvo Radio Code
All Volvo OEM units from the HU-403 to Sensus use a touchscreen or touchscreen-adjacent interface for code entry. There is no physical button method — the code is entered entirely via the touchscreen display.
- Switch on the ignition. The head unit displays a code-entry screen.
- Use the on-screen number pad to tap each digit of the four-digit code.
- Tap OK or Confirm to submit.
- The radio displays the normal interface and audio resumes.
On older HU models without a full touchscreen (HU-403, HU-613), a simplified on-screen prompt is controlled via the physical knobs and shortcut buttons around the screen.

Troubleshooting Volvo Radio Lock States
- Code prompt not appearing on Sensus — some Sensus Connect systems on XC90 II and XC60 II are paired to the vehicle via the VIN and do not require a standalone radio code. If the normal Sensus home screen loads after a battery change, no code entry is needed.
- HU-850 screen is blank — check the two radio fuses in the engine bay fuse box (typically fuse positions 19 and 29 on V60/XC60 — verify in the handbook).
- Wrong code entered — Volvo units allow a limited number of incorrect attempts. After repeated failures, the unit may lock and require a dealer reset.
- RTI unit needs a separate code — the RTI navigation processor carries its own code independent of the HU head unit. If the radio code has been entered but navigation is still locked, the RTI box also needs its own code.
Frequently Asked Questions
What serial prefix does a Volvo radio use?
Volvo OEM radios do not use a standardised prefix like BMW's GR or SEAT's SEZ. The serial is a plain alphanumeric string — typically 10–14 characters — printed on the label under the barcode on the head unit casing, or shown in the Sensus system information menu.
Do all Volvo HU-series radios need a code after a battery change?
All HU-403 through HU-850 units require a code re-entry after any power interruption. Sensus Connect systems fitted to XC90 II (2014+) and XC60 II (2017+) may not require a code if the system is VIN-paired — these systems self-authorise on reconnection.
How do I remove a Volvo V70 III HU-803 to read the serial?
First remove the surrounding trim ring (it unclips with a trim tool). Then use DIN-release keys or a bent wire tool to depress the clips on either side of the double-DIN aperture. The unit slides straight out. The serial label is on the top surface of the metal casing.
My Volvo XC60 Sensus says the code is incorrect but I'm sure it's right. What now?
Double-check that you are reading the serial number from the head unit's information screen — not from a sticker in the handbook that may belong to a different unit if the radio has ever been replaced. Each unit has its own unique serial and corresponding code.
Is the Volvo RTI navigation code the same as the radio code?
No. The RTI processor and the HU head unit are two separate components with two separate codes. If both are locked you will need to obtain codes for each individually using their respective serial numbers. Our lookup supports both.
