Ford Sound 2000 Radio Code Guide
The Ford Sound 2000 is one of the most common cassette radios ever fitted to a Ford. It appeared in the Fiesta, Escort, Ka, Puma, Mondeo and Transit from the mid-1990s into the early 2000s. When the battery is disconnected the unit locks and shows CODE — and because these cars are now decades old, the original code card is almost always long gone. This guide shows you how to get the code back.
Which Fords have a Sound 2000?
The Sound 2000 (and its sibling the Sound 2002/2006) is a single-DIN cassette unit with a small green or amber display. Typical homes:
- Fiesta Mk4 and Mk5 (1995–2005)
- Escort Mk6/Mk7 (1995–2000)
- Ka Mk1 (1996–2008)
- Puma (1997–2002)
- Transit (1994–2006)
If your display shows CODE ---- after a flat battery, the anti-theft lock is active. The radio still works perfectly — it just needs its 4-digit keycode.
How do I find the serial number on a Sound 2000?
Unlike the later 6000 CD, the Sound 2000 usually cannot show its own serial number on the display. The serial is printed on the label on the top or side of the unit case:
- Switch off the ignition and gently pull the radio forward. On most models you need two U-shaped radio release keys in the four holes on the front.
- Slide the unit out and look for the white or silver label.
- Note the serial beginning with M followed by six digits (e.g. M123456). Some units use a V-prefix.

Entering the code on a Sound 2000
- Switch the ignition and the radio on — the display shows CODE.
- Use preset buttons 1–4 to set each digit: button 1 changes the first digit, button 2 the second, and so on.
- When all four digits are correct, press and hold preset 5 to confirm.
What if the radio shows WAIT or LOCKED?
After several wrong attempts the Sound 2000 blocks further tries and shows WAIT. Leave the radio switched on for 30–60 minutes; the counter resets and you can try again. After ten wrong entries in total the unit shows LOCKED permanently — at that point only a specialist bench-unlock helps, so double-check every digit before confirming.

Can I get the code without removing the radio?
Usually not. The Sound 2000 rarely supports a button combination to display its serial, so removing the unit to read the label is the reliable route. The release keys cost a few euros and the job takes five minutes.
Is the code the same as my old code card?
Yes. The keycode is fixed to the serial number of the unit for its whole life, so the code we calculate is identical to the one on the original card supplied with the car.
