How to Find Your Car Radio Serial Number
Before you can unlock a locked car radio, you need one thing above all else: the serial number. Not the VIN, not the registration plate — the unique serial printed on or stored inside the radio unit itself. Get that right and your unlock code follows in minutes.
There are three main ways to retrieve it, and the one that applies to you depends on your car's make, model, and radio generation. This guide walks through each method clearly so you can find yours without unnecessary hassle.
Method 1: On-Screen Display (Button Combination)
Many radios built after 2000 can display their own serial number on screen when you press a specific combination of buttons. This is the fastest approach because it requires no tools and no removal.
Common button combinations by brand:
- Volkswagen / SEAT / Škoda — Hold preset buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously while switching the ignition on. The VWZ serial appears on the display.
- Ford 6000 CD — Turn the radio on, then hold the RDS / PTY button for a few seconds. Some variants show the M- or V-code automatically when the unit is in SAFE mode.
- Peugeot / Citroën (RD4/RT6) — Press and hold preset buttons 6 and 1 together, or try 1 and 4. The C7-format serial scrolls across the screen.
- Renault (Blaupunkt / Update List) — Press the List button repeatedly, or hold the Band and TA buttons together to reveal the serial on supported units.
- Vauxhall / Opel (CD 30, CD 300) — Turn the radio off, then hold preset 1 and 6 with ignition on. The BE-prefix serial appears.
If the screen shows only CODE or SAFE, the radio is already in lockout mode. Try the combination anyway — some units still display the serial even when locked.
Method 2: Read the Sticker Label
Every radio unit has a label affixed to its casing — usually on the top, side, or rear face of the unit. If your radio is partially accessible through the dashboard opening, you may be able to read the label with a torch and a phone camera without fully removing the unit.
What to look for on the label:
- VW / SEAT / Škoda — A 14-character serial beginning

The label may also carry a barcode. Scanning it with a smartphone barcode reader sometimes reveals the full serial string more clearly than reading tiny print.
Method 3: Remove the Radio (Extraction Keys)
If neither of the above methods works, the radio needs to come out. Most DIN-format radios can be removed using a pair of DIN extraction keys (also called radio release keys), which cost very little and slot into small holes on either side of the radio fascia.
- Switch the ignition off and remove any faceplate or surround trim covering the radio.
- Insert the DIN keys into the two slots until you feel them click and lock.
- Pull both keys outward simultaneously — the radio will slide forward.
- Slide the unit out far enough to see the label on top or the rear face.
- Note the serial, then slide the unit back in until it clicks.
For double-DIN units (common in Audi, BMW, and Mercedes), you may need longer keys or a flat plastic trim tool to release the locking tabs. Check your vehicle's specific workshop guide before forcing anything.

Can I use the VIN instead of the serial number?
No. The VIN identifies the vehicle, but the radio unlock code is generated from the radio's own serial number. A VIN lookup will not produce a working code for your specific unit.
My screen just shows CODE — is the serial still retrievable?
Usually yes. The button combination methods described above often still work even when the display shows CODE or SAFE. If the screen combination fails, remove the unit and read the label directly.
The serial number label is damaged or worn — what now?
