Continental Radio Code
Continental AG is one of the world's largest automotive suppliers, and its VDO division — formerly Siemens VDO, formerly Philips Car Systems — manufactures OEM head units for a substantial portion of European cars. If your radio shows SAFE, CODE, or a blank digit entry prompt after a power loss, and it carries a Continental, VDO, or Siemens/VDO label, this guide explains the full unlock process.
Which Vehicles Use Continental / VDO OEM Radios?
Continental/VDO supplies infotainment hardware across multiple platforms:

- Volkswagen — Continental/Bosch joint ventures power many RCD 310 and Composition units in Golf VI/VII, Polo V/VI, Passat B8

Serial Number Format
Continental/VDO serial formats differ by the vehicle manufacturer:
- Renault / Dacia: PRE-code format — typically a string beginning with T0, 8200, or 2811, printed on a sticker inside the unit slot or shown via an on-screen function
- VW group (Continental/Bosch): Standard 14-character VWZ serial
- Fiat / Opel: Numeric or BP-prefix serial on the unit casing label
How to Find the Serial Number
- Renault PRE-code — on-screen: Many Renault/Continental units display the PRE-code by navigating to the Settings → System Information menu, or by pressing the band and volume buttons simultaneously during startup.
- Label method: Use DIN extraction keys or a plastic pry tool to remove the unit. On Continental-built units the serial sticker is usually on top of the casing. Some Renault Media Nav units have the serial on a sticker visible through the slot (torch required).
- VAG Continental units: Hold presets 1 and 6 with the ignition on in SAFE mode to scroll the VWZ serial across the display.
How to Enter the Code
- Renault — Tuner List / Update List: Enter the code using the steering-wheel scroll button or the preset buttons; confirm with the OK/select control. On older Mégane II units, press preset buttons 1–4 then confirm with button 6.
- Renault Media Nav / R-Link: The touchscreen displays a PIN entry pad. Enter the four digits and tap Confirm.
- Fiat OEM: Preset buttons 1–4 to cycle each digit; hold the last button to confirm.
- Opel/Vauxhall CD 300/400: Preset buttons 1–4 then press and hold to confirm.
| Vehicle Brand | Radio System | Serial Format | Entry Interface |
|---|---|---|---|
| Renault | Media Nav, R-Link, Carminat | T0 / 8200 / 2811 PRE-code | Touchscreen or presets |
| Dacia | Media Nav basic | PRE-code | Touchscreen |
| VW group | RCD 310, Composition | VWZ (14 chars) | Presets + scan key |
| Fiat | OEM CD, Blue&Me | Numeric / BP prefix | Presets 1–4, hold confirm |
| Opel/Vauxhall | CD 300, CD 400, Navi 600 | BE / BP prefix | Presets 1–4, hold confirm |
Troubleshooting
- Renault shows WAIT 60 minutes: After a number of wrong attempts, Renault Continental units display a 60-minute wait timer. Leave the ignition on (engine off) and wait for the countdown before retrying.
- PRE-code has leading zeros: Renault PRE-codes sometimes begin with zero. Include all digits when submitting the serial to avoid receiving the wrong code.
- Fiat Blue&Me shows no code prompt: The Blue&Me system integrates Bluetooth and voice commands. After a battery change it may request a separate code for the radio module. See the Blue&Me article for full details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is VDO the same company as Continental?
Yes. Philips Car Systems became Siemens VDO, which was acquired by Continental AG in 2007. Units branded VDO, Siemens/VDO, or Continental/VDO are all the same organisational lineage. The code-retrieval method is the same regardless of which brand name appears on the unit.
My Renault Mégane III shows SAFE — where is the PRE-code?
On the Mégane III with a Continental/VDO unit, the PRE-code is often accessible via the Settings → Technical menu when the car is unlocked and ignition is on. If that option is not present, use a torch to read the sticker visible through the DIN slot, or remove the unit with a plastic pry tool.
Does Dacia use the same code system as Renault?
Yes. Dacia shares the Renault platform and uses the same Continental/LG Media Nav hardware with PRE-code serial format. The code lookup process is identical — select Dacia on the brands page and enter the PRE-code.
What does WAIT mean on a Renault radio?
WAIT (sometimes shown as ATTENDRE or a countdown number) indicates a temporary lockout triggered by incorrect code entries. The lockout is typically 60 minutes on Renault/Continental units. After the timer expires, the unit accepts another attempt.
Can I enter the Continental radio code myself at home?
Yes, for all the platforms listed above. You do not need dealer equipment. The only tool needed is the correct code (from your serial lookup at radiocodelookup.com) and knowledge of which buttons to press for your specific unit.
