Car Radio Says ERR or Error: Fix Guide
After entering what you hoped was the right code, your car radio now shows ERR, ERROR or Err. Input is blocked, the radio is silent and you are not sure whether you have permanently damaged anything. The good news: ERR is a normal, reversible error state. Here is what it means for each make and how to recover.
What Does ERR Mean on a Car Radio?
ERR (or ERROR) indicates that an incorrect code was entered. The radio records the failed attempt and temporarily blocks further code entry. Depending on the brand, it may:
- Display ERR for a few seconds then return to the code prompt (single-attempt acknowledgement)
- Display ERR and then switch to a WAIT or LOCKED state (penalty timer or ignition-cycle lockout)
- Display ERR and count remaining attempts down before a longer lockout
In all cases, ERR does not mean the radio is permanently broken. It means one wrong attempt has been recorded.
ERR Behaviour by Brand
| Brand | ERR Display | What Happens Next | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford (6000 CD / Sony) | ERR briefly, then LOCKED count | Counter decrements; multiple wrong attempts lead to LOCKED 13 | Complete ignition cycles; see Ford LOCKED guide |
| Vauxhall / Opel (CD 30 / CD 300) | ERR, then WAIT 30 | 30-minute wait with ignition on | Wait 30 min, try again with correct code |
| Renault (OEM) | ERR or - - - - | Returns to blank entry after seconds | Wait briefly, check code, retry |
| Honda (Alpine / Clarion OEM) | E for a few seconds | Returns to CODE prompt or WAIT | Wait if WAIT appears; retry |
| Fiat / Alfa Romeo (Blue&Me OEM) | ERR briefly | Returns to 0000 entry | Check code, retry immediately |
| Peugeot / Citroën (RD4 / RT6) | ERR | Returns to CODE or WAIT | Wait if instructed; retry |
Immediate Steps When You See ERR
- Do not keep pressing buttons. Each additional wrong entry compounds the lockout. Stop immediately.
- Note whether the display transitions to a WAIT or LOCKED state — if so, follow the appropriate process for your brand (wait out the timer or complete ignition cycles).
- If the display returns directly to the CODE prompt, take this opportunity to verify you have the correct code before entering it again.
- Retrieve a fresh code from radiocodelookup.com/brands using your radio's serial number. Do not rely on a code from memory or an old note if you are unsure.
How to Reset After ERR on Common Radios
Ford 6000 CD
After an ERR, the counter increments. If LOCKED 13 appears, complete 13 ignition cycles (off-on) to return to the CODE prompt. Press button 6 to display the serial number, then obtain the correct code before attempting entry again.
Vauxhall CD 30 / CD 300 / Navi 600
After ERR, the display shows WAIT 30. Leave the ignition on for 30 minutes. The display will return to CODE. Serial numbers begin with BE or BP on the unit label. Units include Corsa D, Astra H/J, Zafira B, and Meriva B.
Fiat Punto / Bravo / Panda (Blue&Me / Continental / Blaupunkt OEM)
These radios typically show ERR briefly, then return to the 0000 entry state. The serial number is on the unit label (prefix BP for Blaupunkt-built units). Enter the four digits and confirm with the 5 button.
Peugeot / Citroën (RD4 / RD45 / RT6)
After ERR, a short WAIT period (typically 30 minutes) may apply. Serial numbers are on the C7 barcode label. On some units, pressing preset 1 and 4 simultaneously displays the serial on screen. Enter the code using the preset buttons and confirm with the Seek button.
How to Avoid ERR in Future
- Write the correct code in your service book as soon as you obtain it.
- Before entering, confirm the serial number showing on the radio matches the serial you used to look up the code.
- Enter each digit slowly and count aloud — ensure each digit registers on the display before moving to the next.
- On units where pressing a button more than once increments the digit, count how many times you press each button carefully.
Frequently Asked Questions
My radio shows ERR and then goes completely blank — is it dead?
No. Some radios briefly display ERR and then switch off the display (backlight off) as part of the penalty state. Switch the ignition off and back on — the CODE prompt should return, or a WAIT display will appear. The unit is still functioning.
How many times can I enter the wrong code before it permanently locks?
Most factory radios do not permanently lock from the customer side. Ford imposes escalating ignition-cycle countdowns (up to LOCKED 13). Vauxhall uses repeated WAIT 30 periods. Honda and Nissan use increasing wait times. Permanent lock-out by the customer through repeated attempts is not possible on any common factory radio — though each brand has its own penalty escalation.
Can entering ERR damage the radio?
No. Recording a wrong attempt does not cause any electronic damage. The radio is designed to handle multiple incorrect entries — the lockout mechanism exists purely to slow down brute-force attacks.
After ERR my code prompt shows different starting digits — have they changed?
No. The display resets to the default 0000 or 1000 starting position after each attempt. This does not mean your code has changed — it is just the input cursor resetting. Your code remains the same four or five digits generated from your serial number.
