Car Radio Says CODE: How to Unlock It
Switch on your car and the radio display reads CODE, 0000 or just a blank cursor waiting for input. The radio is locked, no audio plays, and you are not sure what to do next. This guide explains exactly why this happens, how to find your code, and how to enter it correctly — for every major car brand.
Why Does a Car Radio Show CODE?
Car radios fitted at the factory use an anti-theft system that activates whenever the unit detects a loss of power. If the battery is disconnected, goes flat, or a fuse blows and is replaced, the radio resets and enters code-locked mode. It will not play audio, respond to preset buttons, or tune to any station until the correct four- or five-digit code is entered.
This is intentional: a locked radio is valueless to a thief because it cannot be used in another vehicle without the code. The CODE or 0000 prompt means the system is working exactly as designed.
What CODE Looks Like on Different Brands
| Brand | Display Message | Serial Prefix | Code Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford | CODE, LOCKED | M- or V-prefix | 4 digits |
| Vauxhall / Opel | CODE, 0000 | BE or BP prefix | 4 digits |
| Renault | CODE, - - - - | Printed on card | 4 digits |
| Peugeot / Citroën | CODE | C7 barcode label | 4 digits |
| Fiat / Alfa Romeo | CODE, 0000 | BP prefix | 4 digits |
| Honda | CODE, 1 - - - | Label on unit | 5 digits |
| Nissan | CODE | Label on unit | 4 digits |
| Toyota / Lexus | CODE | Label on unit | 5 digits |
Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda radios use SAFE rather than CODE — they work differently. See our brand guides for those specifics.
Step 1: Find Your Radio's Serial Number
The serial number is the key to getting your code. It is printed on a label on the body of the radio unit. There are two ways to access it:
- Screen shortcut (no removal needed): Many radios display the serial on screen when you press a button combination. Ford 6000 CD: press and hold preset 6 with the radio in code-prompt mode. Vauxhall CD 30: press and hold 1 and 6 together. Peugeot/Citroën RD4: press preset 1 and 4 simultaneously. Check your owner's manual for your specific model.
- Physical removal: Use a set of DIN extraction keys (Ford, Vauxhall, Volkswagen) or trim removal tools (double-DIN units). Slide the keys into the slots on either side of the unit, pull firmly and slide the radio forward. The serial number label is on the side or top of the unit body.
Step 2: Retrieve the Correct Code
With the serial number in hand, visit our brand selector at radiocodelookup.com/brands, choose your car manufacturer, enter the serial number and receive your code instantly. The process takes under two minutes.
Step 3: Enter the Code
The entry method varies slightly by brand, but most use the same preset-button system:
- Switch on the ignition to accessories position and power on the radio. Confirm the CODE prompt is showing.
- Use preset buttons 1, 2, 3, 4 (and 5 on five-digit units) to set each digit. Each press of a button increments that digit position by one.
- Once all digits are set correctly, press OK, Select, or the Seek/Scan button to confirm (varies by brand — see the note on the code prompt screen or in your manual).
- If the code is correct, the radio unlocks and resumes normal operation within seconds.
What If CODE Does Not Accept My Entry?
- Verify you have the correct code for this specific unit's serial number — the code is not transferable between units.
- Ensure you are pressing buttons in the right sequence. On some units (e.g. Renault), the buttons cycle forward; on others, prolonged holding resets a digit.
- If the radio displays WAIT, ERR or LOCKED after a wrong attempt, see our dedicated guides on those error states — you may need to wait before trying again.
Common Causes of the CODE Prompt
- Flat battery charged or replaced
- Battery terminal disconnected for maintenance or repair
- Blown audio or accessory fuse replaced
- Radio removed and refitted (e.g. during dash or speaker work)
- Jump-starting another vehicle
All of these events interrupt power to the radio momentarily, which is sufficient to trigger the lock.
Frequently Asked Questions
My radio shows 0000 — does that mean the code is 0000?
No. The display of 0000 is the starting position for code entry — each digit position starts at zero and you increment each one using the corresponding preset button. It is not the actual code.
I have never had to enter a code before — why is it asking now?
If the battery was recently replaced, went flat, or the vehicle had electrical work done, the radio will have lost power and locked. This is the first time you have encountered the prompt because power was not previously interrupted.
The code in my service book does not work. What should I do?
First confirm the serial number on the unit matches what the code was generated for. If the radio has been replaced at some point, the code card in the service book may belong to the original unit. Retrieve a fresh code using the current unit's serial via our lookup tool.
Can a garage enter the code for me?
Yes, but any garage will charge for the time. It is faster and less expensive to obtain the code yourself — use the serial number shortcut to avoid removing the radio, then enter the code in under a minute.
